There are a lot of reasons you could be pumping. You may pump frequently because you’ve returned back to full-time work, because your new baby is in the NICU, or because bottle feeding is working better than trying to get a latch. Whatever your reason, we can bet that you spend a lot of time with that pump! So here are a few of our best tips for making the most out of your situation to ensure you can keep breastfeeding up for as long as you want.
Invest in a good pump. You need it to be reliable and efficient, so get a good one. Do your research and ask around to find the best option for you in your price range. You may also want to consider other options such as rentals. (as an aside; check with your insurance company to see if they will cover this expense. Some companies will cover some or part of the cost of purchasing a breast pump.)
Whenever possible try and stick to a schedule. This can be really tricky at first, but especially if you are working you’ll need to get into a good routine. This will help with continuing your supply.
Stay organized. This means keeping up on having clean bottles/bags, cleaning parts, and having everything packed the night before work or trips.
Be sure to have extra parts around for the pump. A missing or broken piece could be an emergency, so make sure you have what you need just in case. I would suggest having
Eat well and stay hydrated. You can’t make milk if you don’t have fuel! This means planning meals for you, too. Keep a water bottle with you and drink all day.
Relax and set realistic goals. This is a tough routine, no matter your situation. Be kind to yourself and try to stay positive. Know that you aren’t alone and you are doing your best!
Surround yourself with supportive people. This will really help with all of the other steps! If you have supportive people on your side it’s all the more easier to keep up the schedule and effort, and maybe they will even make you dinner :).
