WEDNESDAY MARCH 18TH 2020, TORONTO, ON- As cases ofcovid-19 continue to multiply around the world, being pregnant during this time can create many questions. How can I protect myself? Am I at higher risk of getting covid-19? Both of these questions are valid. The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has worked to provide answers.
How can I protect myself from covid-19 while pregnant?
First foremost- wash your hands. Regardless if you are pregnant or notyou can help stop the spread of covid-19 by washing your hands regularly for at least 30 seconds. Songs like Happy Birthday repeated twice, the corus of Africa- by Toto or the first verse of Lizzo’s Truth Hurts are all 30 seconds songs you can sing to ensure you are washing for the correct time.
Covering your cough with your elbow or forearm can also help stop the spread of germs and will also keep your hands clean. The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Covering your cough will help immensely.
The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus.Pregnancy suppresses a person’s immune system so if it is possible for you and your lifestyle, stay home and participate in self isolation. Take this time to relax and have some time to yourself before your new baby's arrival. Do a facemask, catch up on some movies you’ve wanted to see, read a book. Staying home and away from others will slow the spread of covid-19 and is the best way to protect you and your baby.
Am I at higher risk of getting covid-19?
According to the CDCit is currently unknown if pregnant women have a greater chance of getting sick from covid-19 than the general public. While pregnant you experience changes in your bodies that may increase risk of some infections. It is always important for you to protect yourself from illnesses and shall you ever feel sick to contact your healthcare provider.
